Now that I am all set up in the new studio, I have been missing painting on denim. I have taken a few orders lately, and this is one that is about to go out in the mail. This is for a writer friend back in South Dakota.

11 pipers piping

This piece is quite long and I do not have an oversized scanner, so my camera is doing its best to show all eleven pipers. I may have to photograph each piper individually so you can see the characters and lines and details. But here is this to give you the general idea! Note that there is always one SYLVIA in every crowd. (See day SEVEN). 🙂

Steampunk Dorothy is ready for a ride over the rainbow. With a little help from her friends, a little courage, and a lot of heart, she realizes that wisdom is still far greater than rubies…and that there is still no place like home.

Birds are craving the crumbs. Bird Lady just wants the birds to be happy. As we all know, true joy is obtained by giving and sharing.

This illustration is done in a collage style that I am enjoying very much. It is for a book I am working on. More about that can be found here.

I just feel like today is special for some reason. With an abundance of gratitude, I realize it is time to get back to my usual outgoing self, and come out of “hiding.” In my little hiatus, I see that things have really taken off at etsy, and I would like to really start selling there. So, for the 100% shameless promotional part of this post, I want to offer a ONE HUNDRED DOLLAR giveaway!!!!!!! :

3. Follow princesstomato on TWITTER
4. Remain or Add me as a friend on FACEBOOK
5. Join my FACEBOOK GROUP (this may end up replacing my regular mailing list in the future)
6. Promote this giveaway on any of your sites, blogs, etc!!! (you will have to let me know if you have done this so i can add your extra entry!!)

So, start posting!and adding me! I will use a random number sorter to give away this $100 PRINCESSTOMATO gift certificate good toward painted denim on June 30.

Today I am filled with so much gratitude. It has been a long and painful year and a half…filled with many, many ups and downs. I was just looking through some photos from the card in my camera,,,,and I nearly started crying. Just so many, many things I have to be grateful for. My life is really full of more blessings than I probably deserve, and I hope to make the most of it!

I would like to extend a note of thanks, mixed with a bit of apology out to my wonderful, wonderful customers over the years. You have been with me through it all, and I love you all! Your kids have “grown up” with me and my own kids. We have celebrated and prayed for each other, cried and rejoiced over many things. I know that I have not offered nearly as many items as I used to, and I have been a bit out of touch…not quite myself. Sorry about that, from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for your patience and patronage. I have used this time to complete some orders for you, but my “absence” was filled with time to work on a project that has been extremely fulfilling for me. (more on that later)…

Mabel at The Doodle Diner

thedoodledinermabel

I am so happy to announce that the Doodle Diner is open! Mabel here may spill more bubble gum and hot peppers than she serves, but she always remains POISED. She may not even bring you what you ordered, but she is sure to make you smile. Mabel doesn’t sweat the small stuff.

Each Doodle Diner member was asked five questions. You can see them all here throughout the day: THE DOODLE DINER
1. Your studio… used to be the library of the brick school house we live in.

2. What is the first thing you remember drawing? Obviously, I drew lots of things before this, but I remember looking at a ballerina on my jewelry box. My family was waiting for me to come out of my room so we could go somewhere. (First things first! heehee) When I came out, I showed them what I drew, and they could not believe I did it without any help. I tried to draw it again soon after, and it didn’t turn out so well. Sigh.

3. When you go to a diner, what food would you be most likely to order? Something with ranch dressing. And I will still want to taste whatever you ordered. Unless what you ordered a reuben. You are safe with a reuben.

4. Is there a certain person from your childhood that especially encouraged you to pursue your love for art? Lots of people—art teachers, parents…but especially my grandparents. My grandma used to make sure I signed and dated my artwork. It really made me feel like a real artist, and like the art was important and official. One more example: my parents knew I liked to color. Once they woke me up in the middle of the night just to have popcorn and COLOR with me.

5. Is there something in your artistic life you take for granted? Yes. My thumbs.

I am so glad to be a doodler! Woohoo!

TIME for Valentines, Spring Fever, and remembering

February 11, 2009 at 11:42 am | Posted in domestic diva, follow your heart, home sweet home, IF, illustration friday, princesstomato, time, valentines boxes | 5 Comments

It has been 365 days of living my life without my sweet dad to call, talk to, or hug. I miss him tons. He was such a great dad and friend. He would want us to live life to the fullest, even today. I am going to finish up a portrait, then get some Valentine cookies and a nice dinner going for when the kiddos get home we can have a special family night. xoxox

My third-grader finally gave up making a robot for what would be the third year in a row for his Valentine’s box. This year he opted for a gumball machine. He went to town and really did this all by himself! I love it. And I also love gumball machines. I have one in my studio, and when anyone gets a RED gumball, they have to give me (or someone)a hug! 🙂

One reason I did not become an architect or interior designer is because I suck at spatial relations. My fourth grade daughter- who- always- has- to- be- different- and- masterpieceful wanted to make a dog in a shoe for hers. We tried to recruit my engineer husband, but he was wimping out on us. So, we dug in and figured this out by looking at her actual tennis shoe for reference:

Oh, and a little catching up on the daily quotes/headings from SIMPLE ABUNDANCE:
Feb 8: You Are an Artist.
Feb 9: A Fresh Canvas Every 24 Hours.
Feb 10: Creating an Authentic Lifestyle for Yourself and Those You Love
Feb 11: Divine Discontent: Learning to Live by Your Own Lights—for this one, it says Grace strikes us when we are in great pain and restlessness…Sometimes at that moment a wave of light breaks into our darkness, and it is as thought a voice were saying You are accepted.” Paul Johannes Tillich
So, I suppose all these thoughts do tie together, as they always seem to do. This week’s illustration friday is TIME.

PS:Oh, I should mention that I am glad I am not DOING TIME for what I did on Saturday. To read more, check out my facebook status as of Feb 11 7pmish: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?v=feed&id=628998395#/profile.php?id=628998395&v=feed&viewas=628998395It really is hilarious!

IF Illustration Friday: SIMILAR shadows

December 9, 2008 at 2:12 pm | Posted in Birds, friends, girl, IF, illustration friday, princesstomato | 21 Comments

Sketch of Girl and Bird

Sketch of Girl and Bird

Quick sketch of a girl who found an egg. She hopes it is similar to the ones mama bird has been sitting on in the nest above.

My favorite part of this is actually how the shadow of the girl’s hands ended up looking similar to a bird shadow–the kind we form with our hands to appear on a wall. How serendipitous!

The actual sketch has more design elements to it, such as the branches and leaves forming a heart-shaped border around the girl. I played around with the albeit-horrible-scan in Photoshop, and learned that I can move things parts of drawings around, resize them, adjust perspective, etc. Wow! So I was able to make the girl smaller and move her so that she is under the tree more. I may have distorted her a bit in the process. I am such a beginner at PS, and am amazed what can be done with it. I know I could have drawn it by hand five times over in the time I spent playing, but I am trying to learn new things. Eventually I will get to figuring out how to make and use customized brushes.

Anyway, we are covered in snow here and life is good. Have a great day!

Illustration Friday…”LATE”

Some like to rise at the crack of dawn, and others would rather sleep late. Beauty sleep is tough to get in a place like this!

This scene is part of a little story I painted on a pair of overalls. It was called Green Acres, I believe. Maybe it was Park Avenue…

CONFESSION: Of all weeks to have my theme selected for IF, I would have paid MONEY to not have it be this week! Aaaaaa! This is the mother of all weeks this summer….seriously overbooked here!!!! I will be “back” soon, though! And I promise to check out all the wonderful submissions for PUNCHLINE then! This is crazy! I even have tons of newer versions of this theme already done, but will have to save them for something else! Meanwhile, a black and white version of one I already posted for “HOMAGE” back in April is going to suffice! Thanks for all the emails from so many of you asking where I AM!!!

RAIN RAIN GO AWAY! All this rain has not been good for our basement. We have been pumping out water, throwing away many FORGOTTEN items that are now ruined, and trying not to use water unless we absolutely have to.  There is just no place for any more water to go around here! Roads are flooded, fields look like lakes, and there are some yards we could probably use a boat in! But life is good!

We did get to go fishing yesterday, and finally got some ball practices in this week.  This along with trying to keep up with orders for paintings is keeping me busy.

Here is my post for this week’s Illustration Friday theme: FORGOTTEN.  The first is a photo of a drawing I literally had forgotten about.  (With good reason! I was 17 years old, and that was 21 years ago…wow, time flies!)  I used NuPastel, I believe.  The child looks so hungry and forgotten..at least that is what I had in mind at the time… I still have the original but it is packed in the back of a closet in an old portfolio.  My 9 year old daughter wants me to get it out so she can see some of my older work.  Last night she used some charcoal pencils I had when I was her age.  That was kind of cool…

The last image is something I just sketched quickly last night.  Guess she FORGOT to show her parents that report card.  Easy to do when summer is here… catching frogs and jumping puddles is way more of a priority…

Catching up on posting these… Apparently, I am on a music-theme kick. 🙂 Poem for this is in progress.

I played with lots of backgrounds as a study.

Next is one I quite like.  Sketched very quickly, and has some potential.

Lastly, I have got to show what my friends in the boutique clothing world are up to this week.

I am way too busy to offer a custom listing for this, but my sweet daughter is listing her story. It is doing quite well, thanks to all the generous girlies out there looking out for my friend, Mud. Click HERE to see the listing, and be sure to check out the other ones too.

Whew, that along with working on some items for clients and setting up for the art show at the school, end of the school year activities,,,,I am a little overwhelmed.  WIll post more of the 21day sketches in a few days.  It is such great practice and is definitely challenging me to try some new things.

I made a commitment last week to work on something new each day.  If I could just squeeze in practicing with the Wacom, using Photoshop, and other mediums I have gotten away from the last few years, for just 30 minutes a day…something good will come of it!  Then, last night I ran into this challenge on Alicia’s blog: THE 21-DAY CHALLENGE…perfect!!

Here is one of the pieces I did yesterday. I wrote the little poem last week, and then could not get this image out of my head so I had to give it a shot.  I like the sketches better than the color version,,,but I may make another version too.  That is the purpose of the challenge, after all!
